Emperor Menilik's Palace complex and Unity Park was opened to visitors on the 10th October 2019. Built in the late 1800's, this historic complex covers an impressive 40 Hectare area in total. In many ways, Ethiopia's cultural and historical depth far exceeds visitor's expectations of what they would find in a poor African Nation.

Home to four monarchs, one President and three Prime Ministers, this palace complex is packed with extraordinary exhibits that give insight into the lives of Ethiopia's rulers over three centuries - from their living quarters to their working areas; banqueting halls to their antique vehicle collections; from the selection of remarkable coronation regalia to a collection of photographs and artworks that chronicles Ethiopia's history back to the Queen of Sheba. There are also reminders of its dark history from the mid 70's and early 80's when it was used as a prison and torture chamber of political opponents which may leave the visitor with a bad aftertaste and melancholic contemplations.

Expect the unexpected, to be blown away as I was, with the architecture and interiors of this magnificent place which was built with great vision nearly 140 years ago. Usage of SLR cameras were not allowed to the public and had to resort to my smart phone to capture these moments which were far beyond my expectations.
